{update: thanks to readers sal & dolly for pointing out the original miscredit.  I had confused it with this photo of the same scene, taken from a different angle by Navy photo journalist Lt. Victor Jorgensen.  Einsenstaedt’s photo is much more famous & celebrated for its composition, but I happen to like Jorgensen’s shot, too!  I love how you can see both of his eyes, gently closed, & the details of the seams going down the back of her stockings.  there’s actually a really interesting backstory as to why this photo was taken, and many questions about the identity of these two people. I’m just so fascinated by it!}
